Airbnb Launches $250 Million Housing Accelerator Initiative
Airbnb launched the Housing Accelerator program to provide $250 million in financing and grants to address the housing affordability crisis.
Airbnb launched the Housing Accelerator on Monday, a multi-pronged initiative aimed at addressing the housing affordability crisis. The company pledged $250 million in below-market last-dollar financing to jump-start stalled rental developments that have passed regulatory hurdles but lack final funding. Through this program, the company aims to unlock more than $5 billion in housing investment over the next decade.
The initiative begins with a $6.4 million investment in the St. John redevelopment in Austin, Texas, which will support 201 affordable units. Beyond direct financing, the program includes a $5 million innovation prize consisting of five $1 million grants for ventures that reduce construction time and costs. Airbnb also established a policy arm to advocate for zoning and permitting reforms in markets where 100 million Americans reside.
CEO Brian Chesky stated that the housing crisis was not created overnight and will not be solved overnight, but noted that the accelerator is designed to move the industry in the right direction. To track global housing policies and outcomes, the company plans to launch the Airbnb City Index later this year.
