Meta Launches AI Alerts for Teen Suicide and Self-Harm Risks
Meta introduced a safety feature that notifies parents when teenagers discuss suicide or self-harm with Meta AI across Instagram, Facebook, and Meta Horizons.
Meta launched a safety feature called Parent Alerts that notifies parents if their teenage children discuss suicide or self-harm with Meta AI across Instagram, Facebook, and Meta Horizons. The system utilizes a dedicated AI to flag high-risk conversations, which are then manually reviewed by humans before notifications are sent via app, email, text, or WhatsApp. To protect teen privacy, parents are not shown the exact chat content but instead receive expert-backed resources to help them intervene.
Initially available to parents using Instagram supervision controls in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, the feature will expand globally by the end of 2026. Meta stated it will err on the side of caution when a teen's intent is ambiguous. The company also extended its Limited Content setting to Meta AI, allowing parents to restrict the range of topics the chatbot discusses with minors. Additionally, Meta is developing a system to alert local emergency services if any user is deemed to be at imminent risk of suicide.
Responses to the rollout are mixed. Larry Magid of ConnectSafely praised the balance between privacy and safety, while the nonprofit Fairplay expressed skepticism, citing previous research on ineffective safety tools. These developments come as the company faces ongoing legal challenges regarding child safety and allegations of using AI to target employees during layoffs.
