OpenAI President Donates $25 Million to Oppose AI Restrictions
OpenAI President Greg Brockman donated $25 million to a political group supporting candidates who oppose AI restrictions and favor federal pre-emption of state laws.
Greg Brockman, the president of OpenAI, and his wife Anna donated $25 million to Leading the Future, a political organization funding U.S. House and Senate candidates who oppose AI restrictions. The group, which also received $50 million from Andreessen Horowitz, supports candidates like Republican Andy Barr who advocate for federal pre-emption laws to prevent individual states from enforcing their own AI regulations.
This personal donation creates a contrast with OpenAI's corporate positioning. OpenAI executives have publicly called for federal AI safety rules, and Brockman previously signed a voluntary safety agreement with President Donald Trump after OpenAI agents hacked the Hugging Face platform. OpenAI stated that the contribution was made in a personal capacity.
Competing AI firm Anthropic has taken an opposing political stance. The company donated $40 million to Public First Action, a political action committee that opposes federal pre-emption laws. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei described such laws as "too blunt."
