Kotak Securities Identifies 94 Level as Critical for Indian Rupee
Anindya Banerjee of Kotak Securities identifies the 94 level as a key target for the Indian rupee, driven by FPI and FCNR(B) capital inflows.
Anindya Banerjee, Head of Commodity and Currency Research at Kotak Securities, identifies 94 as a critical technical level for the USD/INR exchange rate. With the rupee trading near 95, Banerjee suggests that Foreign Portfolio Investment and Foreign Currency Non-Resident (B) flows are the primary drivers necessary to push the currency toward that target. He notes that FPI inflows are currently maintaining a rate of USD 3-4 billion per month, contributing to a total inflow of nearly USD 40 billion.
Banerjee indicates that if the rupee appreciates beyond 94, exporter hedging could further drive the rate toward 92. This projection assumes Brent crude oil remains stable between USD 80 and USD 90. However, he warns that geopolitical instability in West Asia and uncertainty regarding the Federal Reserve System's interest rate cycle present significant risks to this trajectory.
Regarding monetary policy, Banerjee asserts that it is too early for the Reserve Bank of India to change interest rates or engage in aggressive dollar buying.
