India Adds 405 Items to Defence Indigenisation List

The Ministry of Defence of India identified 405 strategically important items for domestic production to reduce import reliance and boost the national manufacturing ecosystem.

The Ministry of Defence of India notified the sixth Positive Indigenisation List on August 18, 2026, identifying 405 strategically important items for domestic development. The list carries an estimated business potential of Rs 3,070 crore and includes 389 items for Defence Public Sector Undertakings and 16 items for the Indian Coast Guard.

Targeted components span air systems such as the Su-30MKI and Light Combat Aircraft, armoured vehicles including the T-90 and BMP-II, and missile systems like MRSAM and Konkurs-M. The initiative is part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat program, which seeks to strengthen the national security supply chain by indigenising industrial components rather than only final weapon systems. The government intends to procure these items from Indian industry, including start-ups and micro, small, and medium enterprises.

Since the 2020 launch of the SRIJAN Defence Portal, the government has offered over 33,000 items for indigenisation, with more than 15,700 successfully developed. This has resulted in an estimated import substitution value of Rs 9,000 crore and domestic procurement orders totaling approximately Rs 10,000 crore through March 2026. India's annual defence production reached a record Rs 1.78 lakh crore in the 2025-26 financial year, with exports rising to Rs 38,424 crore. The government has set a target to increase defence exports to Rs 50,000 crore by 2029.
