Anthropic Signs $32 Billion Data Centre Lease in Queensland

AI company Anthropic has signed a long-term lease agreement for its first Australian data centre at the Western Downs Digital Park in Queensland. Developed by Singapore-based Zerra DC in a consortium with Macquarie Capital and Dexus, the project is estimated to cost between $30 billion and $32 billion. The facility, located near Dalby and Kogan, is planned to come online in 2027 with a total capacity of 2.16 gigawatts, focusing on inference for the Claude AI model rather than model training.

To support the massive power demand, the project will connect to the Braemar power station and utilize coal generators through a state-level carve-out from national renewable energy mandates, alongside renewable power purchase agreements. The site will employ a closed-loop, air-cooled system to protect local water supplies. The agreement remains subject to approval by the Foreign Investment Review Board and local councils.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli described the investment as a massive show of confidence in the state following a U.S. trade mission. However, the project has faced scrutiny from regional representatives and federal ministers. Federal Member for Maranoa David Littleproud questioned the reliability of renewables for such a large load, while Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt flagged the need for mandatory measures to limit the facility's impact on electricity and water resources.
