Italy Investigates Police Death as Bologna Protests Turn Violent

Bologna prosecutors have opened a manslaughter investigation into police officers and medical workers following the death of Abderrahim Fakir, a 42-year-old Moroccan-born entrepreneur. Fakir died on Sunday, July 19, 2026, after police restrained him face-down on the ground in the Pilastro neighborhood. Video footage shows Fakir struggling for breath and pleading for help while officers reportedly told ambulance personnel he was having a psychiatric episode.

The incident triggered widespread protests in Bologna on Monday. While Mayor Matteo Lepore organized a peaceful demonstration in support of Fakir's family, a splinter group of approximately 100 people clashed with police, setting two cars on fire and throwing firecrackers. Authorities responded with tear gas and water cannons. The Autonomous Police Union and other officials reported that 64 officers were injured during the unrest.

Political reactions are sharply divided. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated the death must be thoroughly investigated but emphasized that violence against law enforcement is unjustifiable. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and the League Party defended the officers' conduct, with some union leaders blaming Mayor Lepore for the subsequent devastation. Conversely, opposition leaders and human rights campaigners condemned the restraint as inhumane, with some drawing comparisons to George Floyd and U.S. ICE tactics.
