Republicans Hold District 30 Seats Amid Minnesota Blue Wave
Republican candidates Eric Lucero, Walter Hudson, and Chad Westberg won their District 30 races despite a statewide DFL trifecta and record-breaking voter turnout.
Republican candidates Eric Lucero, Walter Hudson, and Chad Westberg secured victories in Minnesota Senate District 30 and House Districts 30A and 30B during the November 3 general elections. Lucero won re-election with 60% of the vote, Hudson won nearly 59%, and Westberg took an open seat with 62%. These wins occurred despite a statewide Blue Wave that granted the DFL Party trifecta control of the Minnesota Senate, House, and Governor's office.
While the Republicans won by sizeable margins, the region showed signs of increasing competitiveness. DFL candidates gained twice as many votes compared to 2022 as Republicans did. Senator Lucero attributed this shift to residents relocating from DFL-controlled areas of the Twin Cities to growing cities like Otsego, St. Michael, and Elk River.
Minnesota recorded the highest voter turnout in the nation for this election, with 66.5% of eligible voters casting ballots and over 2.8 million total votes cast. In the lakes area Highway 10 corridor, same-day registration laws led to turnout exceeding 100% of registered voters in Frazee, Ottertail, and Vergas. Other regional turnout varied, with House District 9B reporting nearly 73% and Rush Lake Township recording the lowest at nearly 57%.
