California Diesel Prices Hit Record Highs Over $8 Per Gallon

California diesel prices reached a national peak of over $8 per gallon, prompting the Trump administration to consider a diesel export ban to lower costs.

Diesel prices in California surged throughout September, reaching an average of over $8 per gallon by October 1. This rate represents the highest in the United States, driven by global market pressures including Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries and shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz resulting from the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.

The Federal Government of the United States is considering a diesel export ban to increase domestic supply and mitigate these costs. However, some economists warn that such a move could inadvertently raise pump prices by reducing global competition for barrels.

The price spike has created severe financial stress for agricultural trucking operators and farmers. Bill Cruickshank, chairman of the California Wheat Commission, reported that some growers have seen fuel costs increase by up to 50%. Local producers report few options for cost reduction due to tight profit margins and a lack of rural energy infrastructure. In some areas, the Pacific Gas and Electric Company has informed business owners that electric vehicle charging infrastructure is not currently feasible.
