Washington Legislative Candidates Debate Crime and Taxes in Kent

Candidates for Washington's 5th, 33rd, and 47th legislative districts debated public safety, drug addiction, and tax policy at a forum in Kent.

Candidates from Washington's 5th, 33rd, and 47th legislative districts debated crime, taxes, and drug addiction during a Meet the Candidates forum on October 6 at Green River College. The event, hosted by the Kent and Covington Chambers of Commerce, served as a platform for candidates to outline their platforms ahead of the November 3 general election.

Republican candidates, including Michelle Bennett, Yuri Marinchik, and Patrick Peacock, advocated for stricter penalties for theft and drug use, increased police resources, and the repeal of the 2021 Climate Commitment Act. Marinchik specifically called for the immediate cancellation of the act and harsher criminal punishments for theft.

Democratic incumbents Debra Entenman and Chris Stearns emphasized collaborative public safety models and the use of transitional housing to address homelessness. Stearns expressed support for a millionaire's tax and a lower arrest standard based on reasonable suspicion. Meanwhile, Libertarian candidate Cobi Clark proposed a shift toward private security for crime prevention and suggested funding drug treatment through alcohol and marijuana taxes to reduce the public financial burden.
