Jim Chalmers Urges Progressives Not to Mock One Nation Supporters

Treasurer Jim Chalmers urged progressives to avoid mocking One Nation supporters while the government faced backlash over a delayed credit card payment ban.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers urged progressives not to mock or cancel supporters of the One Nation party, arguing that "feelings are as real as facts" regarding the appeal of nostalgic political messages. While Chalmers described Pauline Hanson as "inexperienced, incompetent and incapable of managing the economy," he maintained that the government must acknowledge the economic pressures facing voters to counter far-right strategies of division.

Political tensions escalated as One Nation member Angie Bell suggested Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Small Business Minister Anne Aly should be "shamed and stoned" due to a delayed Australian Taxation Office credit card payment ban. Bell later withdrew the comments, which Minister Aly characterized as "racist" and "misogynistic."

In separate legislative actions, Resources Minister Madeleine King introduced a gas reservation scheme requiring companies to set aside 20% of exports for domestic use. The Australian government also expressed condemnation regarding a proposal to livestream a firing squad execution in the United States.
