GOP Lawmakers Demand WNBA Protect Caitlin Clark from Violence

Representative August Pfluger and 10 GOP colleagues warned the WNBA of potential federal civil rights investigations over the alleged targeting of Indiana Fever player Caitlin Clark.

Eleven Republican lawmakers, led by August Pfluger, sent a formal letter to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert demanding accountability for what they describe as unnecessary physical hostility and violence against Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark. The group, including members of the Republican Study Committee, cited incidents where Clark was hip-checked, poked in the eye, and struck in the throat, arguing these acts exceed routine physical play.

The lawmakers specifically referenced a June 24 game in which Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas struck Clark in the throat and allegedly kneed her in the groin. The WNBA issued Thomas a one-game suspension and a $1,000 fine following a post-game review. Thomas described the contact as a "complete accident" and reported receiving death threats after the event.

Pfluger and his colleagues suggested the attacks may be racially motivated and warned that the league could face investigations from the Department of Justice, Department of Labor, or the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for violating federal civil rights laws by allowing a hostile work environment. The lawmakers requested a response by July 24 regarding the league's review mechanisms for violence and online harassment.

The Indiana Fever stated they had no prior knowledge of the letter and had not communicated with the congressional group, though team officials emphasized their commitment to player safety.
