Lok Sabha Tables Report on Justice Yashwant Varma Cash Scandal

The Lok Sabha is tabling an inquiry report regarding unaccounted cash found at the residence of former judge Yashwant Varma.

The Lok Sabha will table a two-volume inquiry report on August 12, 2026, regarding allegations of unaccounted cash found at the official residence of Yashwant Varma. The investigation followed a March 14, 2025, fire at Varma's Delhi bungalow, during which firefighters allegedly discovered massive amounts of burnt currency in a storeroom.

Speaker Om Birla established a three-member inquiry committee on August 12, 2025, which submitted its findings in May. A separate in-house committee led by former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna concluded that Varma maintained "active or tacit control" over the storeroom where the money was hidden.

Although more than 200 members of parliament signed an impeachment motion in July 2025, Varma has since resigned from the Allahabad High Court. This resignation rendered the formal removal proceedings infructuous, though the Ministry of Law and Justice has not yet formally notified the resignation.
