Paul Mashatile Resumes Duties After Two-Month Medical Leave

Deputy President Paul Mashatile returned to official duties this week following an undisclosed surgery and a two-month recovery period.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile resumed his official duties at the beginning of the week of October 5, 2026, after nearly two months of medical leave. Mashatile fell ill at his home in Johannesburg in early August and underwent a minor surgical procedure on August 4, though the government did not disclose the specific nature of the illness or the operation.

During his absence, Mashatile delegated his responsibilities to other government members. His return coincides with critical government preparations for the medium-term budget policy statement and other fiscal engagements. His immediate schedule includes chairing cabinet committees, responding to oral questions in the National Council of Provinces, and engaging with interfaith communities.

The African National Congress expressed support for his return, with national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu stating that his leadership is vital as the party intensifies its election campaign to secure a mandate from the public. Separately, the MK party confirmed that its president, Jacob Zuma, remains in good health and ready for local government elections following a routine medical checkup on October 7.
