North Korea Condemns US-South Korea Ulchi Freedom Shield Drills

The Government of North Korea condemned the Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, labeling the drills a "rehearsal for an aggressive war." The 11-day exercises, scheduled to begin Monday, involve 28,500 U.S. personnel and 18,000 South Korean troops.

A spokesperson for North Korea's foreign ministry stated that Pyongyang would respond to a "new level of a threat with a new level of a deterrent" and would not tolerate the confrontational situation. To signal its opposition, North Korea previously fired a ballistic missile over the Sea of Japan.

United States officials maintain the exercises are defensive and designed to address modern warfare. Some officials noted the drills specifically prepare soldiers for potential combat against North Korean troops who have gained operational experience while deployed with Russian forces in Ukraine.
