Portillo's Lays Off 18 Percent of Corporate Staff

Portillo's Hot Dogs, LLC reduced its corporate headquarters and field management workforce by approximately 18 percent on July 31. The layoffs primarily targeted employees at the company's headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois, while restaurant-level staff remained unaffected.

CEO Brett Patterson stated the reductions were necessary to operate more efficiently and ensure resources are directed toward the right priorities. This restructuring follows a decline in second-quarter performance, marked by a 3.4 percent drop in transactions and a 1.2 percent decrease in same-store sales. Although the company opened seven new locations in Texas and saw revenues grow to $199 million, net income fell nearly 29 percent to $7.2 million.

In response to the weaker sales data, the company has slowed its national expansion efforts and is currently reworking its strategy for entering new markets.
