Brazil Sues Discord for 500 Million Reais Over Safety Failures
The Brazilian government is seeking 500 million reais in damages from Discord Inc. for allegedly failing to implement required age-verification and safety safeguards.
The government of Brazil has filed a federal lawsuit in Distrito Federal seeking 500 million reais ($97.1 million) in damages from Discord Inc. The Justice Ministry alleges the platform lacks the age-verification mechanisms and safeguards required under Brazilian law, citing risks that contributed to the death of a teenager in July 2025.
Attorney General Jorge Messias stated that the government attempted to reach an agreement with the company for two weeks before initiating legal action. The lawsuit demands that Discord implement systems to detect violence and animal abuse, enhance parental controls, and strengthen protections for women and children.
Discord Inc. has described the legal action as disproportionate, asserting that it has engaged in good faith and proposed technical changes to improve safety within the country. This lawsuit follows a separate regulatory order that halted Discord's livestreaming services in Brazil and a fine levied against ByteDance Co Ltd.
