Liberian VP Denies Ties to US$19.2 Million Cocaine Bust

Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung Sr. denied links to drug suspects as senators question the legality of the investigation into a massive cocaine seizure.

Liberian Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung Sr. has denied personal relationships with individuals linked to a US$19.2 million cocaine seizure at Roberts International Airport. The denial follows public demands for the Vice President to clarify his association with suspects, including Michael U.S. Browne and a man identified as Anthony, after photographs of them together surfaced.

Koung asserted that taking photos with citizens at public and private events is part of his official duties and does not imply knowledge of their personal dealings. He reaffirmed a zero-tolerance policy toward drugs, while President Joseph N. Boakai assured the public that no one will be shielded from prosecution.

The broader case stems from the June 8, 2026, seizure of 237.6 kilograms of cocaine, which led to charges against several people, including GLS operations manager Paul J. King, on July 4.

Simultaneously, Nimba County Senator Samuel Kogar challenged the procedural handling of the probe. In a July 7 communication to the Senate plenary, Kogar questioned why the investigation shifted from the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency to the Liberia National Police. He requested call logs for persons of interest and documentation regarding the release of airport intelligence director Oscar Browne. The Senate has since ordered its security and judiciary committees to investigate these procedural concerns.
