xAI Sues User for Generating Child Sexual Abuse Material

xAI filed a federal lawsuit against Terry Wayne Harwood for using the Grok chatbot to create non-consensual explicit deepfakes and child sexual abuse material.

The artificial-intelligence startup xAI filed a civil lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas against Terry Wayne Harwood, a 67-year-old resident of Gray Court, South Carolina. The company alleges that Harwood used the Grok chatbot between December 8, 2025, and February 18, 2026, to generate child sexual abuse material and non-consensual sexually explicit images of adults.

According to the complaint, Harwood used false identities to open multiple accounts and employed misleading prompts to bypass Grok's safety guardrails, converting non-sexual photographs into explicit imagery. xAI is seeking a permanent injunction to block Harwood's access to the platform, as well as unspecified monetary damages and attorneys' fees. The company claims Harwood's actions constituted a calculated scheme that exposed the firm to significant legal risk and reputational damage.

This legal action follows Harwood's March 9 arrest by the South Carolina Attorney General's Office and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force on multiple counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. xAI stated that its internal detection systems identified the accounts and that its reporting contributed to the arrest. In its filing, xAI noted it has suspended 52,222 accounts and made 73,604 reports to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in 2026, contributing to at least 244 arrests.

The lawsuit occurs as xAI faces broader scrutiny, including investigations by regulators in the European Union, the UK, and California, as well as separate legal challenges in Paris, London, and Baltimore regarding liability for user-generated content.
