Tim Cook Announces Potential iCloud+ Paywalls for Siri AI

During a third-quarter 2026 earnings call, Tim Cook confirmed that Apple plans to introduce paid upgrade options for iCloud+ to recover compute costs associated with the next-generation Siri AI. While basic AI capabilities will remain free on supported devices, high-compute cloud tasks may be subject to usage limits. Cook suggested that power users could buy up the stack through expanded iCloud+ tiers to maintain their usage levels.

Integrated into iOS 27, the upgraded Siri is currently in beta and scheduled for a broad release this fall. It features expanded capabilities including personal message scanning, photo editing, and complex web searches, powered in part by a licensed Google Gemini model. Apple has already restricted some advanced features, such as intelligent video search in the Home app, to the 2TB iCloud+ plan or higher.

Cook described the ability to process a percentage of AI requests on-device as a competitive weapon, which allows Apple to maintain lower capital expenditure than competitors like Microsoft and Meta. This strategic shift follows a period of AI development delays and a $250 million settlement regarding iPhone 16 AI marketing. The announcements come as John Ternus prepares to succeed Cook as CEO.
