Gold Prices Dip as Strong US Data Fuels Rate Hike Fears

Gold prices fell toward $4,000 after strong US economic growth and inflation data increased expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates in December.

Gold prices declined to $4,008.64 an ounce during early Asian trade on October 30, 2026, following a period of choppy trading and consolidation near the $4,000 support zone. The downward pressure stems from stronger-than-expected U.S. economic reports, including a third-quarter GDP growth rate of 3.4% and a September personal consumption expenditures price index increase of 0.5%, the largest monthly rise since March.

The Federal Reserve System maintained interest rates at 3.75% to 4.00% but refused to rule out another hike in December. This stance, combined with inflation remaining above the 2% target, has strengthened the U.S. Dollar and supported bond yields, creating headwinds for nonyielding assets like gold. Market volatility was further compounded by a technology-led selloff on Wall Street, where Alphabet Inc. shares dropped approximately 13.3% following disappointing quarterly results, prompting some investors to liquidate gold positions to cover equity losses.

Geopolitical instability in the Middle East provided some defensive support for the metal, though immediate fears eased as Vice President JD Vance sought to revive negotiations with Iran's Supreme National Security Council. While an Iranian official dismissed a separate Qatari proposal as unacceptable, gold also found support from long-term investors and Chinese households buying on price dips. Traders continue to navigate a tight range with resistance at $4,040.00 and support at $4,020.00.
