Tarrant County Tables Proposal to Cut Polling Sites

The Tarrant County Commissioners Court tabled a proposal to reduce the number of Election Day polling sites from 316 to 176 for the upcoming November election. The plan, introduced by elections administrator Clint Ludwig to increase efficiency and reduce costs, triggered intense public backlash during a Tuesday meeting where hundreds of protesters alleged the cuts were intended to suppress voting.

During the proceedings, County Executive Tim O’Hare ordered the clearing of the chambers and the arrest of at least one former Democratic state representative due to disruptive behavior. Republican commissioners dismissed claims of a conspiracy to limit access to the polls. In response to the proposal, state Representative Vikki Goodwin and state Senator Nathan Johnson organized a rally to oppose the reductions.

Following the unrest, the court directed Ludwig to revise the proposal to include a higher number of polling locations than the original 176 suggested.
