Jamia Millia Islamia Orders Student Union Election Restoration
Jamia Millia Islamia administration agreed to hold student union elections within 15 days of approving a new constitution following two weeks of student protests.
The administration of Jamia Millia Islamia announced on October 26, 2026, that it will restore student union elections, which have been suspended since 2006. The university ordered that elections be held within 15 days once a new union constitution is approved. This decision follows two weeks of hunger strikes and protests by students demanding the union's restoration.
As part of the agreement, the university revoked show-cause notices and suspensions issued to protesters and formed a committee to investigate the conduct of security personnel during the unrest. In return, the administration required students to issue a public apology and remove defamatory social media posts.
Some students and the Jammu & Kashmir Student Association rejected the order, arguing it is ambiguous because it lacks a fixed date for the constitution's approval. Protesters continue to demand the resignations of the Vice-Chancellor and the Chief Proctor, with some maintaining their hunger strike until these demands are met with written commitments.
