Alphabet Inc. Invests $811 Billion in AI Infrastructure
Alphabet Inc. is spending $811 billion on AI infrastructure to support a $514 billion cloud backlog despite facing negative free cash flow.
Alphabet Inc. is aggressively expanding its AI infrastructure with a committed spend of $811 billion to fulfill a cloud computing backlog totaling $514 billion. This strategic shift positions Google Cloud as the company's primary future growth engine, with recent revenue rising 82% to nearly $25 billion and achieving a profit margin of 35.6%.
While the search business remains the current primary revenue source, generating $63 billion last quarter with 17% growth, analysts expect the cloud segment to potentially surpass search as the largest growth driver by 2027. Total adjusted free cash flow is projected to reach $300 billion by 2031.
This massive data center buildout has created immediate financial strain. Alphabet raised its 2026 spending plan for the second time this year, nearly doubling 2025 levels. These expenditures resulted in negative free cash flow in the second quarter for the first time since the company's initial public offering, forcing Alphabet to sell new debt. Management indicated that free cash flow will "remain under pressure" through 2027.
