S&P 500 Companies Set Record for Upbeat Profit Forecasts
A record 72 S&P 500 companies issued third-quarter profit forecasts exceeding Wall Street expectations, driven largely by the artificial-intelligence boom.
FactSet reported that a record number of S&P 500 companies have issued third-quarter profit forecasts that exceed Wall Street expectations. Of the 116 companies providing earnings-per-share outlooks, 72 topped analysts' estimates, surpassing the previous record of 65 set in the second quarter of 2021. Overall, S&P 500 companies are expected to see a 29.5% increase in earnings.
The information-technology sector drove this optimism, with 44 companies issuing upbeat outlooks to tie a previous record. This growth is largely attributed to the artificial-intelligence boom, which has increased demand for chips and data center infrastructure. Semiconductor firms such as Nvidia and Micron Technology have benefited from high demand and the ability to raise prices.
Specific companies reporting forecasts above expectations include Super Micro Computer and Teradyne. Super Micro Computer CEO Charles Liang stated that demand for AI and IT products was "stronger than ever," while Teradyne CEO Greg Smith noted that recent growth highlighted AI demand across all parts of the business.
