Romania and US Report Cooling June Inflation Rates

Romania and the United States reported declines in annual inflation for June, though central banks in both regions remain cautious regarding future interest rate movements.

Inflation data released July 14 showed cooling trends in both Romania and the United States for June, though the drivers of these declines differ. In Romania, the annual inflation rate fell to 10.4%. Akcenta attributed this decrease to seasonal price drops in eggs, vegetables, and fruits, but warned that rising energy prices continue to pressure the market.

In the United States, the Labor Department reported that annual inflation declined to 3.5% from 4.2% in May, supported by lower costs for used cars, clothing, and gas. Despite the drop, US core inflation rose 2.6% yearly, remaining above the Federal Reserve's 2% target.

Monetary responses in both regions remain conservative. The National Bank of Romania is expected to maintain its monetary policy rate at 6.5%. Meanwhile, Federal Reserve policymakers are divided on whether to implement rate cuts or further raises by the end of the year. Analysts note that conflicts in the Middle East pose potential inflationary risks for both economies.
