Japan Allocates $944 Million to Rapidus for 2nm Chips
The Japanese government is providing ¥150 billion in additional funding to Rapidus Corp. to develop 2-nanometer chips and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is allocating an additional ¥150 billion ($944 million) to the state-backed chip startup Rapidus Corp. The funding, intended for the fiscal 2027 budget, supports the company's goal to produce cutting-edge 2-nanometer chips by 2027.
Japan aims to secure technological independence in quantum computing, robotics, and artificial intelligence while reducing its strategic reliance on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. The investment positions Rapidus to compete in a high-stakes foundry market against established giants including Samsung Electronics Co. and Intel Corp.
Rapidus also faces competition from the Terafab project, a partnership between Intel and Elon Musk designed to manufacture semiconductors for xAI, SpaceX, and Tesla Inc.
