Iran Blames Foreign Aggression for Qeshm Island Oil Spill

Iranian cleanup crews are working to contain an oil spill off Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf, specifically near the coastal village of Shib Deraz. Satellite imagery shows a dark trail of oil and black deposits on beaches in a known breeding ground for endangered hawksbill sea turtles.

Iran attributed the pollution to foreign military aggression on August 14, with Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi and Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei blaming strikes by the United States and its regional allies. Baqaei stated that preliminary evidence points to a foreign bulk carrier as the source of contamination documented at three coastal sites. Iranian officials argued the environmental damage proves the necessity for Iran to implement a management mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz.

Conversely, the shipping-monitoring platform TankerTrackers described the spill as a self-inflicted wound. The platform alleged the pollution resulted from an Iranian attack on the bulk carrier MINOAN PIONEER on August 3 in Oman's Musandam Governorate, after which the oil drifted across the strait to the Iranian coast. The incident occurs amid a five-month conflict between the United States and Iran, during which the International Maritime Organization confirmed 65 incidents involving ships in the region since March.
