West Bengal Assembly Suspends Kunal Ghosh After Budget Protest

The West Bengal Legislative Assembly Speaker suspended Kunal Ghosh for one day on July 22, 2026, after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA disrupted a budget discussion on the Home and Hill Affairs Department. Ghosh prevented Opposition Chief Whip Akhruzzaman from speaking by standing in front of the microphone and shouting slogans, leading to a scuffle with marshals who forcefully removed him from the House.

Ghosh claimed his actions were a response to the opposition chief whip removing his name from the speakers' list. While senior MLA Tapas Roy proposed suspending Ghosh for the entire session, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari requested the Speaker to limit the penalty to a single day. Adhikari condemned the behavior as unacceptable and noted that such incivility cannot be tolerated.

Minister Dilip Ghosh further criticized the MLA as a political novice and asserted that the TMC is collapsing and acting out of desperation.
