Australia Trade Surplus Hits A$2.83 Billion in September

Australia reported a September trade surplus of A$2.83 billion, nearly tripling economist forecasts due to falling imports and rising metal exports.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that Australia's trade surplus surged to A$2.83 billion in September, nearly tripling economist forecasts of A$940 million. This represents a significant increase from the A$184 million surplus recorded in August.

The growth was driven by a 3.3% decline in imports and a 2.3% increase in exports. The import drop was primarily led by a 34.7% decrease in non-monetary gold imports, which totaled a decline of A$1.10 billion. Export growth was supported by a 23.5% jump in metals, excluding non-monetary gold, and a 6.6% increase in other mineral fuels, which offset a 3.5% decline in coal exports.

This economic data arrives as the Reserve Bank of Australia continues to address persistent inflation. The central bank recently raised the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.85% to stabilize the economy.
