Yemeni Government Repels Houthi Movement Attacks Amid Regional Escalation

The Government of Yemen repelled a Houthi Movement attack on the al-Mafalis front in southeastern Taiz province on Thursday. The 4th Infantry Hashd Brigade reported that the militia suffered heavy losses during the engagement, though overnight clashes in the province left at least one government soldier dead and another critically wounded. This follows a broader military escalation that began Wednesday, with the government launching artillery and drone strikes against Houthi Movement positions in several governorates, including al-Dhalea and Marib.

Simultaneously, Houthi Movement rebels continued drone and missile strikes on government warehouses and Saudi Arabian oil facilities. On Tuesday, the group attacked a commercial ship in the Bab el-Mandeb strait, killing six people. In response, Rashad al-Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, declared that all Houthi Movement actions will now meet a comprehensive response. He stated the government opposes a new truce that repeats past failures, seeking instead a permanent peace where the state holds sole sovereignty over weapons.

Regional instability extended to the Strait of Hormuz and the Arabian Sea, where Iran and Oman are managing oil spills. One spill off Qeshm Island is suspected to have resulted from an Iranian attack on a bulk carrier. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei questioned who would be responsible for the costs of cleanup, citing the presence of foreign military operations in the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman.
