Mayor Zohran Mamdani Urges Democrats to Pursue Affordability Agenda
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called for relentless momentum after Democrats regained control of Congress in a historic midterm election sweep.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged the Democratic Party to put its "foot on the gas" following a resounding midterm election sweep on Tuesday. Democrats regained control of Congress, capturing at least seven former Republican Senate seats and making substantial gains in the House, including flipping seats in traditionally red states such as Texas and Georgia.
Mamdani characterized the results as a referendum on national politics and a mandate to deliver tangible dignity and affordability to working people. He argued that the party can now shift from a defensive posture—focused on protecting health insurance and SNAP benefits from the Republican-sponsored One Big Beautiful Bill Act—to an offensive strategy aimed at making life more affordable for Americans.
Among the notable victories, Mamdani praised Abdul El-Sayed, who will become the first Muslim U.S. senator after winning in Michigan. Other key wins included James Talarico in Texas, Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia, and Jocelyn Benson in Michigan. In New York, progressive candidates Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier are headed to Congress.
While celebrating the progressive shift, Mamdani noted a continuing productive relationship with Governor Kathy Hochul, despite her lukewarm reception to his proposals to raise taxes on wealthy New Yorkers.
