Nigeria Police Bar Non-State Security from Osun Election

The Nigeria Police Force has barred the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun), vigilante groups, and other non-state security outfits from participating in security operations for the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu issued a directive prohibiting these groups from escorting electoral materials, guarding polling units, or bearing arms.

Police authorities stated that election security is the sole responsibility of constitutionally recognized agencies, including the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. The force warned that any member or sponsor of unauthorized outfits will be arrested and prosecuted.

Additionally, authorities warned political parties and candidates against voter intimidation, ballot snatching, and vote buying. The police asserted that anyone disrupting the electoral process through violence or thuggery will face prosecution regardless of their political status.
