Australia's Antisemitism Envoy Proposes Independent Oversight for Public Broadcasters

Antisemitism envoy Jillian Segal called for an independent oversight committee to monitor ABC and SBS coverage of the Israel-Gaza war during a royal commission hearing.

Australia's special envoy to combat antisemitism, Jillian Segal, testified before the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion on July 9, 2026, alleging that the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) provide biased reporting on the war in Gaza. Segal argued that the broadcasters disproportionately favor anti-Israel perspectives and accused the ABC of lacking concern for accuracy. She specifically criticized SBS for using death statistics from the Gaza Health Ministry, which she labeled as grossly inaccurate.

To address these issues, Segal proposed creating an independent oversight committee, claiming current internal ombudsmen allow broadcasters to mark their own homework. She further questioned why both organizations refuse to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. ABC Editorial Director Gavin Fang and SBS News Director Amanda Wicks defended their refusal, citing the definition's contested nature and the need to maintain editorial independence from political conflation.

The ABC rejected all claims of systematic bias, stating its journalism is evidence-based and fair. ABC ombudsman Fiona Cameron reported a significant surge in complaints, noting an 85 percent increase and the influence of AI-generated submissions from organized campaigns on both sides of the conflict. SBS defended its commitment to social cohesion and revealed it increased resources for its Hebrew language service following the October 7 attacks and a December 2025 terror attack at Bondi Beach, which served as a catalyst for the royal commission.
