Three MSPs Vie for Scottish Labour Leadership After Sarwar Resigns

Three Members of the Scottish Parliament—Joe Fagan, Monica Lennon, and Michael Marra—are competing to lead Scottish Labour after Anas Sarwar resigned to become a trade minister in Andy Burnham's UK government and join the House of Lords.

The leadership contest follows the party's worst Holyrood election result since devolution in May, where it slumped to 17 seats. Internal data shows membership has fallen by roughly one-third over five years to approximately 11,000. Michael Shanks, MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West, criticized the timing of Sarwar's departure, arguing it plunged the party into a fight it could have avoided while reviewing its electoral failure.

During a hustings event in Glasgow on Wednesday, which was partially disrupted by pro-Palestine protesters, the candidates presented diverging visions for the party. Michael Marra, who currently leads in union and parliamentary endorsements, called for a cultural shift to avoid further decline. Monica Lennon positioned herself as the democratic socialist candidate, criticizing policies on winter fuel payments and Gaza. Joe Fagan emphasized rebuilding trust through local power and focusing on working people.

While the candidates differ on policy, all three called for party unity and warned against internal factionalism and negative briefings. They collectively argued that structural or cultural changes are necessary to rebuild trust with the Scottish electorate and effectively oppose the Scottish National Party.
