Rheinmetall and MSC Acquire Romania Mangalia Shipyard

Rheinmetall and MSC won an auction to acquire Romania's Mangalia shipyard for $155 million to create a dual-use commercial and military facility.

German defense contractor Rheinmetall and Swiss shipping company MSC won an auction to acquire the Mangalia shipyard in Romania for approximately $155 million. The companies plan to transform the facility, located south of Constanța, into a dual-use shipyard that serves both commercial and military markets through the implementation of separate security zones.

Rheinmetall Naval Systems will utilize the yard to construct four vessels commissioned by the Romanian government, consisting of two 96-meter offshore patrol vessels and two 43-meter diving support vessels. The acquisition is expected to close within a few weeks.

Tim Wagner, CEO of Rheinmetall's Naval Systems division, stated that the company plans to expand and upgrade the shipyard comprehensively. He noted that the aim is to develop existing infrastructure, improve production conditions, and adapt capacity to meet future requirements for military shipbuilding projects across southeastern Europe.
