Royal Mail to Cut 2,500 Jobs in Restructuring Plan

Royal Mail will cut up to 2,500 support roles by 2027 to reduce costs following a sharp decline in letter volumes and regulatory fines.

Royal Mail announced a restructuring plan to eliminate up to 2,500 jobs by the end of 2027. The cuts target head office and support functions, representing less than 2% of the company's 131,000-person workforce. The company intends to manage these reductions through natural attrition and voluntary exit programs, stating that no compulsory redundancies will occur and frontline roles, such as drivers and posties, will remain unaffected.

This overhaul follows a more than 70% decline in letter volumes since the mid-2000s and a series of performance failures. The company has missed delivery targets set by Ofcom, resulting in £37 million in fines since 2023. In addition to the workforce reductions, Royal Mail recently increased prices for wholesale postal services, with some medium parcel rates rising by as much as a third.

Chief Executive Officer Alistair Cochrane apologized for the company's poor performance and stated that the changes are necessary to build a future-ready business in a competitive market. He noted that the restructuring aims to remove duplication and allow for further investment in customer service.
