Nigeria Union of Pensioners Threatens Protests at Oyo State Institutions

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State Council, has threatened mass daily protests starting August 18, 2026, targeting the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso and the Emmanuel Alayande University of Education in Oyo. The union is demanding the implementation of a January 2025 directive from Governor Seyi Makinde, which established a minimum monthly pension of 25,000 naira and approved adjustments dating back to 2010.

Union leaders allege that the management of these two institutions have spent 19 months defying the governor's order despite implementing minimum wage increases for active workers. The NUP specifically accused LAUTECH Chief Medical Director Olawale Adebayo Olakulehin and Emmanuel Alayande University Vice-Chancellor Lanre Olaniyan of arrogance and insubordination. While other state agencies and polytechnics have complied with the directive, the NUP claims these institutions have ignored repeated appeals.

To compel compliance, the union is seeking a three-day warning strike through the Nigeria Labour Congress. The NUP stated that the protests are intended to ensure institutional adherence to state directives rather than to embarrass Governor Makinde, whom they describe as pension-friendly. The union warned that failure to implement the increases could result in the shutdown of activities at both facilities.
