Elon Musk Claims Starlink Will Rival Major US Mobile Operators

Elon Musk asserts that Starlink's upcoming cellular network will outperform major US mobile operators and eventually provide most of the world's internet.

CEO of SpaceX and Starlink Elon Musk claims that the company's terrestrial cellular network will likely provide higher bandwidth and better connectivity than major US mobile operators such as T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T. Musk envisions Starlink eventually delivering a majority of the world's internet, while SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell expects the service to acquire significant customer bases from existing mobile networks.

T-Mobile CEO Srini Gopalan disputes this outlook, arguing that satellite connectivity serves as a complement to conventional coverage rather than a replacement. Gopalan questioned Starlink's market differentiation and the specific incentives that would drive customers to switch services.

While T-Mobile currently utilizes Starlink satellites to enhance its rural coverage, the rival cellular service developed by Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is not expected to launch until the end of 2027.
