Maryland Begins Canvassing Mail-In Ballots for Gubernatorial Election
Maryland election officials began reviewing and counting mail-in ballots on October 13 ahead of the November 3 gubernatorial general election.
The Maryland State Board of Elections began canvassing mail-in ballots for the gubernatorial general election on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Local boards of elections are authorized to open, review, and count ballots returned by that date, following state law that permits the process to start eight business days before early voting begins on Oct. 22.
While the public is permitted to observe the canvassing process, officials will keep the results confidential until polls close at 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3. The board confirmed that any ballots postmarked on or before Nov. 3 will be included in the count.
State Administrator Jared DeMarinis stated that the process includes safeguards to ensure election integrity and encouraged voters to rely on official state sources for information. He described mail-in voting as a secure, transparent, and convenient method for citizens to participate in the election.
