Japanese Household Spending Falls for Ninth Straight Month

Japanese household spending declined 3.1 percent year-on-year in August, continuing a nine-month downward trend despite steady gains in real wages.

Japanese household spending fell for the ninth consecutive month in August, dropping 3.1 percent year-on-year. Data released by the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications shows the decline was less severe than the 3.6 percent drop predicted by median market forecasts.

Seasonally adjusted month-on-month spending rose by only 0.1 percent, failing to meet the estimated 0.5 percent increase. This continued slump persists despite real wages recording their eighth straight month of gains in August, indicating a significant lag in the recovery of consumer spending.

The Bank of Japan is monitoring these spending indicators as a primary factor in its decision-making process regarding whether to raise interest rates in the coming months.
