Chicago Mayoral Candidates File Petitions for 2027 Election

Incumbent Mayor Brandon Johnson and several high-profile challengers submitted nominating petitions Monday to qualify for the February 2027 Chicago mayoral election.

Mayoral candidates for the 2027 Chicago election submitted their nominating petitions on Monday, meeting the final filing deadline to appear on the ballot. To qualify, candidates must secure at least 12,500 valid signatures.

Brandon Johnson is seeking a second term as mayor despite facing legislative struggles with the City Council and low approval ratings. He faces a crowded field of challengers, including Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, who currently leads in campaign funding and polling, and Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza, who submitted over 26,000 signatures. Other candidates who filed include U.S. Representative Mike Quigley, who submitted 42,000 signatures, lobbyist John Kelly, cardiologist Lisa Nee, attorney William Quinlan, and businessman Willie Wilson.

Beyond the mayoral race, all 50 aldermanic seats and the positions of city clerk and treasurer are up for election. The first round of voting is scheduled for February 23, 2027, with a potential runoff between the top two candidates on April 6.
