India Must Adapt Job Market for AI by 2047
Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran urges India to strengthen manufacturing and adapt its labor market to AI to reach developed nation status by 2047.
Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran outlined a strategic economic roadmap for India to achieve developed nation status by 2047 during the 13th SBI Banking & Economics Conclave 2026. He argued that India must simultaneously expand its manufacturing and services sectors to reduce the goods trade deficit and build resilience against geopolitical tensions and supply chain weaponization.
Nageswaran specifically highlighted the risks posed by artificial intelligence, warning that a decline in entry-level positions could exacerbate social inequality. To mitigate these risks, he proposed the creation of AI-enabled roles alongside AI-insulated jobs in labor-intensive industries such as elder care and tourism.
To support this transition, the Chief Economic Adviser called for increased private sector involvement in curriculum development to enhance trade skills. He stated that both public and private sectors must be prepared to reinvent their operational methods to navigate the shifting economic landscape.
