Israel Raids Syria and Bombs Airbase Amid US Warnings
Israeli forces detained two men in Syria and bombed an airbase in Idlib, prompting the United States to warn of potential military escalation with Turkey.
The Israeli military conducted an early-morning raid on the town of Jabata al-Khashab in Syria's northern Quneitra countryside on August 19, 2026. More than 100 personnel and 15 military vehicles entered the town and detained two young men, transporting them to an Israeli position in the Jabata al-Khashab nature reserve.
This operation followed a series of strikes on August 18, including the shelling of the Yarmouk Basin in western Daraa and eight airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase in Idlib province. Israel justified the airbase strikes by claiming Syria was about to breach a commitment preventing Turkey from using the facility.
The Government of the United States characterized the bombing of the airbase as an "unnecessary escalation." U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack warned that the situation created a risk of direct military confrontation between Israel and Turkey.
These incursions occur as Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa seeks a security arrangement with Israel to foster peace while maintaining claims to the Golan Heights. Separately, the Israeli government announced criminal investigations into the 2024 killing of Hind Rajab and the 2025 attack on World Central Kitchen aid workers, while separate bombing in Gaza City killed at least nine people.
