PC Component Shortages Drive Gaming Hardware Price Hikes

Yazan Aldehayyat, a Valve engineer, warned that consumer electronics prices continue to rise due to a critical shortage of PC components. The shortage is primarily driven by the AI boom and increased data center demands for RAM. Aldehayyat noted that retail prices are currently lagging behind bulk supply costs by three to six months, suggesting that further price increases are likely for consumers.

This supply crisis has impacted several major gaming hardware providers. Valve's Steam Machine launched at a minimum price of £879 ($1,049), significantly exceeding the original target of approximately £600. Microsoft is raising prices for the Xbox Series X/S line-up effective August 1 and predicts component costs could double again by autumn 2027.

Other industry leaders have taken similar actions. Sony has implemented multiple price hikes for the PS5, and Nintendo announced a price increase for the Switch 2 effective September 1. Much of the global RAM supply is believed to be allocated through the end of 2027.
