US Accuses Russia of Reckless Military Satellite Maneuver

The United States accused Russia of conducting a reckless military operation after a Russian satellite maneuvered within 200 meters of a U.S.-registered commercial satellite.

The Government of the United States accused Russia of conducting a deliberately reckless military operation after the Russian satellite Kosmos-2612 maneuvered within 200 meters of ICEYE-X36. The targeted satellite is a U.S.-registered commercial craft operated by the Finnish company ICEYE that provides radar imagery and intelligence to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

During a United Nations First Committee debate on October 21, U.S. officials stated the maneuver was consistent with on-orbit weapons operations and violated safety thresholds in low Earth orbit. Satellite tracking specialists noted the movement was highly unusual, appearing designed to synchronize orbital altitude and period with the target.

The Government of Russia rejected the allegations as absurd and unfounded, claiming the accusations are part of a Western propaganda campaign. Russian officials countered by accusing the United States of its own aggressive military space ambitions, citing U.S. Air Force comments regarding the deployment of space control weapons.
