Eurozone Industrial Production Falls for Second Consecutive Month

Eurozone industrial production declined 0.1% in July, driven by drops in Germany and France despite signs of manufacturing expansion in August.

Industrial production in the Eurozone fell 0.1% in July, marking the second straight monthly decline. While the drop was less severe than the 0.4% decrease economists predicted, the data reveals a fragmented economic recovery. The decline was primarily driven by the region's largest economies, with production falling 1.5% in Germany and 0.4% in France.

Eurostat reported that German industry faced specific headwinds including extreme heat that lowered Rhine river water levels and disrupted logistics, alongside rising producer prices linked to conflict in the Middle East. Despite these July setbacks, S&P Global surveys indicate that manufacturing activity expanded at its fastest pace in over four years during August.

The broader regional economy grew 0.6% in the second quarter, aided by a 3.4% increase in exports. However, the European Central Bank warns that energy shocks and rising Brent crude oil prices are pushing inflation toward a projected peak of 3.6% in the fourth quarter. This inflationary pressure has led to interest rate hikes that continue to burden industrial activity.
