Lewes to Haywards Heath Rail Line Reopens September 1

Network Rail and Greater Thameslink Railway will reopen the line between Lewes and Haywards Heath on September 1 following an August 13 derailment.

The rail line between Lewes and Haywards Heath will reopen on September 1 following a derailment on August 13. The incident occurred when a Southern train traveling from London Victoria to Eastbourne derailed three of its eight carriages, which slid part-way down an embankment near the River Ouse.

Network Rail and Greater Thameslink Railway are coordinating recovery efforts, using large cranes to lift the carriages. The crash injured 30 people, including two individuals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is currently investigating the cause of the accident.

Investigators have identified a track geometry irregularity and suggest the track may have buckled during the hottest day of 2026, when temperatures reached 38.1C. Greater Thameslink Railway stated that reopening the line before the end of the school holidays is an absolute priority.
