UK Launches AI Biosecurity Lab to Combat Biological Threats

The Government of the United Kingdom established the AI Biosecurity Lab to defend against AI-enabled biological threats through a £300 million public-private partnership.

The Government of the United Kingdom launched the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL) on October 24, 2026, to defend against biological threats enabled by frontier AI. Operating as an independent nonprofit, the lab aims to close security gaps where AI-designed biological sequences might bypass current screening tools. Its primary goals are to improve the early detection of emerging threats and accelerate the creation of vaccines and medical countermeasures.

The lab is funded by £100 million in public funds and up to £200 million in compute and model credits provided by OpenAI and Anthropic. This effort is part of a larger £165 million National AI Biosecurity Initiative and a broader £600 million AI security spending package. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan described the lab as "a major new global institution".

AIBL will collaborate with the UK Health Security Agency and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. Research partners include Google DeepMind, which provides scientific expertise and access to Gemini models, and Basecamp Research Ltd, which contributes genomic expertise and biological foundation models.
