Manipur Violence Kills Four and Triggers Statewide Strike

Violence in Manipur killed four people on October 19, leading to widespread protests and a 48-hour statewide strike across five valley districts.

At least four people died in two separate violent incidents in Manipur on October 19, 2026, sparking intense protests and a subsequent statewide shutdown. In the Sunurok hills of Kangpokpi district, suspected tribal militants ambushed a group of firewood collectors, killing three Meitei villagers—Arubam Ronil, Lairenlakpam Inaobi, and Kshetrimayum Sushil—and injuring several others. In a separate incident, a 24-year-old man died during gunfire and stone-pelting at a musical event in a mixed Meitei and Pangal Muslim locality.

Yumnam Khemchand Singh, the Chief Minister of Manipur, faced immediate backlash as angry residents carried two of the victims' bodies to his residence in Babupara to protest ethnic violence that has persisted since May 2023. Police used tear gas and lathi-charges to disperse the crowd. While Chief Minister Singh visited the injured at a private hospital, he did not address the media. Meanwhile, MLA Thokchom Lokeshor Singh demanded the removal of the Sinai Camp, a Suspension of Operations site near the ambush location.

Following the killings, the Native People Committee Manipur called for a 48-hour statewide strike on October 20 and 21. The shutdown disrupted normal life across Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching, resulting in the closure of markets and schools. Protesters blocked roads and burnt tyres in the Imphal districts, prompting the Manipur Police to deploy additional state and central security forces to prevent further escalation of the conflict.
